Yellowing (discoloration) of plastic products is primarily caused by material aging or degradation, a common issue in plastic products. Factors such as raw material quality, formulation, production processes, and improper storage conditions can all contribute to this phenomenon. Yellowing is a visible sign of material aging, mainly triggered by oxidation reactions, UV exposure, high temperatures, and improper processing/storage, leading to changes in polymer structure.

Core Chemical Mechanisms

Photo-oxidation: UV radiation breaks polymer chains, generating small yellow-colored fragments with conjugated double bonds.

Thermal oxidative degradation: High temperatures accelerate chain scission, causing polymers to react with oxygen and form colored compounds, particularly in sensitive materials like polypropylene (PP) and polystyrene.

External Environmental Factors

>Light exposure: UV wavelengths (280-400 nm) cause the most damage, with outdoor products yellowing 3-5 times faster than indoor ones;

>Temperature & humidity: For every 10°C increase, oxidation rates rise by 1.5-2 times. Humid environments promote additive migration, leading to yellow spots;

>Processing & storage: Excessive processing temperatures cause plastic decomposition and yellowing. Nitrogen oxides (NOx) in storage environments can also induce yellowing.
